Good Day For Science

good-day-for-science

WHAT?

No, seriously:

  •  No more need for embryos:  Standard Skin Cells prove to be mutable in such a way as to BECOME Stem Cells!  Never has cellular reversion been so good for the world, at least from my pathetically limited knowledge of such things.  I don’t wanna say this, but this may be a win for The Bush Administration…Dubya’s lockdown on Stem Cell Research has forced this avenue of study, which could ultimately obviate the need to destroy viable embryos.
  • Paris Hilton fucked, loses potential inheritance.  Let’s call it social science.  Or…socialite science.  Zing!

Look at me: still talking
when there’s science to do!
When I look out there,
it makes me GLaD I’m not you.

I’ve experiments to run.
There is research to be done.
On the people who are
still alive.
And believe me I am
still alive.
I’m doing science and I’m
still alive.
I feel fantastic and I’m
still alive.
While you’re dying I’ll be
still alive.
And when you’re dead I will be
still alive.

Still alive.

Still alive.

I Wonder

…if there’s a way to get the new iPod Touch Gabby got me for Christmas to communicate with my Wii.

Can Ipod Touch Communicate With Wii?

I mean, they both have Wi-Fi…dunno what I’d wanna DO, or anything, just posing the question. The internets are suspiciously silent on the topic.

I feel ill in my tummy. Blargg.

K, back to work. I’ll try to make a real post someday, promise. It feels like I’ve been busy for the past month and a half…and I’m about outta gumption.

Marijuana Laws Cost Government $42 Billion Annually

 Americans consume about 31 million pounds of marijuana every year at an estimated retail cost of $3,570 per pound. That adds up to an expenditure of $113 billion annually, all of it going into an illicit economy untaxed by the federal government.

As explained by a new report in the Bulletin of Cannabis Reform the illegality of marijuana costs local, state, and the federal government billions in tax revenue. According to the federal Office of Management and Budget 28.7% of the gross domestic product – the total economic output of the country in a year – ends up in government’s hands as tax revenue. So, the diversion of money into the marijuana market costs the government $31.1 billion annually.

Marijuana arrests account for 5.54% of all arrests in the United States, which spends $193 billion annually on its criminal justice system. As such, marijuana arrests account for $10.7 billion annually in criminal justice expenses.

Add it all up, and marijuana prohibition costs the US $42 billion every year. This is information that congressional representatives, presidential candidates, and policy makers need to know.

Happy Birthday, Jesus!

JESUS BIRTHDAY

I wonder if he ever celebrated during one of the many winter festivals that dominated his DeeOhBee pre-vajapass. Oh, Constantine! How deep and long-reaching art thou machinations from ages past!

Or, maybe that’s wrong. I have the great gift of believing and not believing in shit at my leisure. It’s a practice that’s enriched my life in ways incapable of being counted.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

The Future of American Scientific Competetiveness

This was written today by a pal of mine who’s a physicist here in Minnesota. Thought I’d help spread the word - ya never know who might be reading this and can help out.

~~~
Hello everyone. This announcement pertains to particle physics, none-the-less you may not stop reading now. The congressional funding bill for 2008 has reduced the budget to Fermilab so significantly, that the lab will have to layoff many employees and halt all R&D on upcoming projects. There is an article in the Chicago Tribune (and virtually no where else). This might not seem like a big deal in a world where terrorists have been attacking our imaginations, but if the bill passes as it is at the end of this week, the future of high-energy particle physics will effectively be killed in the United States. Large numbers of physicists will have to move to other countries to continue their work, and America will lose its position as the world leader of cutting edge particle physics. This will have a devastating impact on the University of Minnesota’s physics department as well. The NOVA project was scheduled to begin construction next year, and the U had been awarded $36M for construction and R&D. The NOVA project will be halted for the next year, and potentially killed for good if this bill passes.
If any of you knows somebody that can get in touch with Amy Klobuchar or Norm Coleman, please forward them the article above. This is extremely important, not just to me, but to the future of American scientific competetiveness.
